Obituary for Veola Suggs

Veola Suggs, of Florida, resided and passed away at home in Reynoldsburg, OH, on September 16, 2019, peacefully in her sleep, after a long fight with Alzheimer’s Disease and Leukemia. She was 82.

Veola Hogan Suggs was born on June 18, 1937 in Florida, and was preceded in death by her parents, David and Elma Hogan, Brothers, David, Robert, and Chuck, Sister, Mary Frances, daughter, Tonja Suggs Milton, and son-in-law, David Early.

Veola married her high school sweetheart, Roosevelt Suggs, also of Florida, who she lovingly was married to for over 62 years. Because Roosevelt was active in the US Air Force when they married, Veola became the dutiful Military wife and mother as they traveled together with their children for both his domestic and over seas assignments, including places like, France, Italy, China, Turkey, Germany, as well as Texas, Kansas, Michigan, and finally settling down in Ohio where Roosevelt retired from the military and the family has lived in Ohio ever since.

While stateside, she worked over 26 years as a phone operator for Southern, Pacific, and Ohio Bell, as well as AT&T. She also was an avid card player and was a long time member of the Pinochle Bugs, and international card playing club for women (and their spouses, nicknamed “pests” as the women were “Bugs”). Due to her long time involvement in the Pinochle Bugs group, she collected dozens of bug related pins she was well known for wearing. Some of her family are wearing bug pins today in her memory.

Veola is survived by her loving husband, Roosevelt Suggs, Her sons, Ronnie (Willy)Suggs, Gary (ex-Traci, ex-Danee) Suggs; daughters, Marche (Michael) Vendel, Toi (Josè) Santamaria, Tami (David, deceased) Early, and Patricia (Jeffrey) Smith; grandchildren, Linna (Tom Jordan), Donovan (Aubrey), Anita (Spencer Cohen), Ashley (Kade James), Derik, Tiera, Kcasey, Chris, Tim, Michael Jr., Klay (Arianna), Justine, Tia, Tonja (Tim Lowe), Trè, Jason, Marcos, Kailah (Ju Sisouvong), Dj, Jett, Michael James, and Audrey; 28 great-grandchildren, and She is also survived by her sister, Delores Hogan Johnson ; brothers, Alonzo (Joan) Hogan, Henry (Linda) Hogan, Joseph Hogan, and Dennis (Denise) Hogan; sister-in-law, Idell Hogan, as well as a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, friends and special long-time friends Carol Reid (Lee) and Darlene McQuiller - Cundiff.
