Shirley Ann Lucas Sowards departed this life on August 31, 2020 at OSU Hospital East, Columbus, Ohio.

Shirley, born October 6, 1935, was the first born of Booker T. Lucas, Sr. and Dorothy Helen (Johnson) Lucas. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Booker T. Lucas, Jr.; sister, Dawn Cheryl Smith and nephew, Darren C. White.

At a young age Shirley moved with her family to Richmondale, Ohio where they resided for several years before moving to Columbus, Ohio. Shirley attended Columbus Public Schools graduating from Central High School. She attended The Ohio State University earning a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Shirley worked several jobs before being employed by the State of Ohio. She retired from the State of Ohio in 1982.

Shirley was a member of Bethel A.M.E. for many years. She was also affiliated with Mt. Vernon Avenue A.M.E singing with the choir, and Redeemer A.M.E. Zion under the pastorate of Rev. Rhenetta Davis.

Since her father was an accomplished musician, she found herself playing the piano and singing in various groups, both in church and independent choruses. Shirley sang with the Helen Carter Moses Guild, Mt. Vernon Avenue A.M.E. Church choir, an original member of the historic (Annie P.) Scott Chorale. She also sang with the Alma Terrell Chorus, Paul Lawrence Dunbar Choir and the St. Dominic Choir for their Christmas concerts.

Shirley was an avid crafter. She participated in many holiday craft bazaars, and provided items for sale at the Golden Hobby Shop in German Village.

Shirley leaves to cherish her memory: sisters; Cara L. Caldwell (Richard), Sandra K. Lucas; sister-in-law Joe Ann Lucas and brother-in-law Vance D. Smith. Nieces and nephews: Michele K. Sanders (David), Monique Smith Allen (Monté), Rhonda J. Grace (Timothy), Keith D. White, Charlotte R. Ellzy (Douglas), Booker T. To Sandy and family,

Please accept our deepest condolences for Ms. Shirley. I am so glad I had the privilege in singing with her at Christmas time. She always seemed to smile and continue to push forward no matter how she was feeling. Know that our family and the family of St. Dominic choir have you all in our prayers.
