McCornell Tanter was born in Silver City, Mississippi on August 28, 1920. She graduated from Belzoni High School in Belzoni, Mississippi in 1937. Stating that it was difficult for people of color to make money in the South, and with hopes of finding a better job opportunity, she moved to Chicago in 1943. It was there that she obtained employment with Lake lawn Restaurant. She later met and married Richard James Tanter and from this union 5 children were born.
McCornell lost the battle to Covid-19 and peacefully went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 6, 2020 at Ohio State University Hospital, Columbus, Ohio. She is preceded in death by her loving parents, Sam Scales Sr and Mariah Busch Scales; preceded in death by all of her siblings, Anthony, Ernestine, Martin, Estelle, Sam Jr., Mariah, Chester, Alice, Leroy and Sylvester. Preceded in death by 2 of her children; Elmer and Kenneth.
McCornell leaves 2 daughters Rosemary Scales of Chicago, Illinois and Annette (Timothy) Gordon of Columbus, Ohio. One son, Maurice Tanter of Chicago, Illinois. Special adopted son Kenneth Staples of Winchester Care, 10 grandchildren; Kenneth, Sophia, Eric, Ahmed, Mikayla, Marques, Antoine, Sheree (Ron) and Shannon. 14 great grandchildren, special nephews Calvin Earl Moree of Dallas, Texas and Charlie (LaVina) Richardson Jr of Chicago, special nieces Janice (Greg) Richardson-Hill of Chicago and Kathy Hall of Phoenix, Az., many cousins, other relatives and friends to cherish her memory.
McCornell was a long-time member of Living Word Christian Center and loved sitting under the anointed teachings of Dr Bill and Veronica Winston. She faithfully attended church every Sunday even though it was a long commute. She had many beautiful qualities that touched the lives of many people. A kind, compassionate, giving and God-fearing woman that possessed a lot of energy, along with a great sense of humor. She had a funny way of saying things and making your heart happy. A truly unique woman, you could find her at age 95 on an exercise bike at the gym and at age 98 dancing at a blues or jazz club. Mccornell lived her elderly years to the fullest. Yet her greatest attribute was her strong faith in the Lord, his word, and in the power of prayer to change the things that she could not on her own. She belived every battle in life could be won by first taking it to the Lord through prayer. She loved her family and was a wonderful, devoted mother and grandmother. Throughout her lifetime she was also an animal lover, having dogs, cats and birds that she treated like family as well. She truly had a big heart and in spite of her hardships and sufferings, she had a grace that helped her see the best in others, while expressing love in a way that made them feel special.
