Obituary for DAMEON SHAWN CURRY

Dameon Shawn Curry, age 51, passed away unexpectedly at home on Sunday, February 21, 2021.

Known to his family as “Shawn”, he was born on June 11, 1969, at the old St. Ann’s Hospital on Bryden Road, Columbus, Ohio. He attended Columbus Public schools and earned his GED and also went into the Job Core Program to further his education. Shawn worked as a chef for various restaurants in the Columbus area, including but not limited to the Berwick Manor, and the Grandview Inn.

Shawn’s life was not always easy for him. In his younger adult years Shawn spent time at the House of Hope for alcoholism, and to work on mastering his sobriety. He helped so many others going through sobriety with his unconditional friendship and support.

Shawn had a lot of passions in life. He had a creative side for drawing. He always said he got his talent for drawing from his mother. Shawn loved to shop antique stores and flea markets for what he called his “personal treasures”. Since he was a chef, he naturally loved cooking and grilling on his smoker. As he would say “he could throw-down” some good grub. Any time he would fire up the grill, he would always share with his neighbors. Shawn loved to go fishing, something him, his Dad, and brothers all loved to do. He spent a lot of time at the Westgate Park fishing with his close friends.

Shawn was an avid Ohio State Buckeye and Cincinnati Bengal football fan. He wore his sports apparel for both teams with pride and never any hesitation, regardless of the season the teams were having. He always took pride in his personal appearance and dress. He would never leave the house unless he had it all together.

Shawn loved some music, especially Tupac Shakur, DMX, hip-hop, and Soul R&B.

Shawn spent a lot of time watching history channels on TV. He also enjoyed the Joel Osteen Sunday services. He had an inquisitive mind and would talk for hours about history and geographical phenomenons.

Shawn had an uncanny sense of humor. There was never a dull moment when he was in a room. His sense of humor would have us all laughing so hard we would be crying and our bellies hurting. We always said he should have been a comedian.

Shawn was warmly known as “Dameon” to his west side neighbors. He was truly an original and one-of-a kind man. He was always willing to help someone or take in a stray animal to provide it with shelter for warmth and food. His memory will reside in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Shawn was blessed with 51 years of life. He will now join many of his loved ones in heaven. Shawn was preceded in death by his father, Thomas W. Curry; Brother, Christian Marlen Curry; Sister, Denise Broady; Niece, Danelle Curry; Uncle, Charles “Charlie “ Willey; Paternal Grandparents, Milton Curry Sr. and Mamie Griffin; Maternal Grandparents; Rosemary (Elmer) Willey; Great Grandparents , Doris Doll McElwee- Kitsmiller, and Charles Kitsmiller; and Emile Chelsey and Carolina Willey; Special Friends; Cecil E. Smith “Mr. C” ; Mark O. Hudgeon; and his feline cat of many years, Fluffy.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his mother, Marcia Williams; his son, Dameon Sean Hughes; daughter, Sha'Marah Daiette Curry; brothers, Thomas W. Curry Jr. affectionately known to Shawn as “ Big T”; Dana L. Curry; Sisters; Kiara M. Curry, Niahemiah Curry; and Cliffonia Curry; Brother-in -law ; Nick Catherine and a a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews; aunts, uncles, cousins; Special Friend, Joel “Jake” Lewis; special pet turtle named “ Mr.T”; his cat "Grey", and many other extended family members and friends who loved him dearly.

Those of us who knew Shawn well, would know he would not want any sadness of a traditional funeral or memorial service. His wishes would be to have a joyous and light-hearted event, if one at all. Therefore, a “Celebration of Life “ event will be scheduled at a later date, dependent on the Department of Health guidelines due to the pandemic.
