Obituary for COLLIS TOOMER Sr.

“ I will lift mine eyes unto the hills from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord which made Heaven and earth.” Our hearts are deeply saddened by the passing of our loved one, but we know that “All things work together for the good of those that love God.”

It is with great sadness that the family of Collis Toomer, Sr. (affectionately known as “Carlos”) announce his sudden passing on Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at the age of 86. Carlos was born on April 29,1936 in Franklinton, Louisiana to the late Mallory and Vendora Toomer. Carlos entered eternal rest at Grant Hospital here in Columbus, Ohio. Carlos lived his life to the fullest and celebrated every moment with thanksgiving.

Collis “Carlos” Toomer, Sr was preceded in death by a devoted father and mother, Mallory and Vendora Toomer; two brothers, Lablanch Toomer and Wille Toomer; one son, Collis Toomer Jr; and a very special niece, Colete Grainger. He leaves to cherish his precious memories his wife, Jewel Toomer of Columbus, Ohio; one son, Alfonso (Carolyn) Toomer of Hartsville, S.C.; one brother, Larnell (Yonnette) Toomer of Hephzibah, Georgia; two stepdaughters, Ramona and Jessica Badley; and one step-son, Norman Badley of Euclid, Ohio; 14 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, a special niece, Jasmine Waters; two God-daughters, Cheryl and Ciara Fields; and a host of close family and friends.

Collis attended the public schools of Frankinton, LA and graduated from Washington Parish High School. He then entered the United States Air Force where he held the job of Air Borne Fuel Mechanic while serving his country. He left the Air Force after 10 years of service and made Columbus, Ohio his home. He attended a technical school to become a heavy vehicle mechanic and worked for the city until his retirement in 2021.

Carlos was an avid sports fan. His favorite teams were those that represented the state of Ohio. He made sure that he had a front row seat for all the Ohio State Buckeye games, as well as the Cleveland Browns Football games. He was also a fan of the Cleveland Cavs team. Win or lose these were still his favorite teams. Carlos owned a corvette for many years and through his love for his corvette, he reached out to other corvette owners and started a corvette club. He was the founding member of The Corvettes of Distinction Corvette Club Established in 1994. Carlos and his loving wife often attended many car shows far and near with their corvette buddies.

Carlos never met a stranger. He loved socializing with this family and friends, many loved him for his compassionate ways and his caring heart. “If you knew him, and had him for a friend, he wasn’t just a friend for the word, he was a friend indeed.”
