Obituary for Lillian M. Spencer

Lillian M. Spencer
Lillian "Lil" M. English Spencer, age 93, was born on May 24, 1924 in Gary, WV. She departed this life on Wednesday, February 21, 2018. The last words we heard her say were “Praise the Lord” (repeated this 5 or 6 times). She was the oldest of the ten (10) children born to Golden Love and Mary Effie (Poe) English. She received her education in the public schools and graduated from Gary Negro High School in 1943. She accepted Christ in her life at a very early age at The Apostolic Temple Church in Gary, WV. She faithfully served the Lord until her departure from this life. She was married on February 21, 1946 to William W. Spencer and moved to Columbus, OH. To this union, five (5) children were born. Lillian was a homemaker for many years, but she worked part-time at Spencer’s Restaurant on Mt. Vernon Avenue, where her husband was co-owner. After the restaurant closed, she went to Lazarus and worked as a Hostess in the Chinz Room Restaurant.
She enjoyed traveling and wanted to go “everywhere”. Amongst her travels, she went to London, England and Paris, France. She also enjoyed attending church conventions, the family reunions and the high school reunions. She enjoyed reading and listening to music. Her favorite spot in the summer was her front porch, where she sat constantly for many hours. Her son, Richard, granddaughter, Katherine, and Katherine’s husband, Bennie, planted beautiful flowers in the yard and on the porch for her to enjoy. Of course, she was a beautiful, classy and elegant lady, who loved her tailored suits, hats, shoes, purses and silk flowers. Her silver hair was admired and stood out in a crowd.
Lillian was preceded in death by her parents, Golden Love and Mary Effie English, husband, William W. Spencer, daughter Joan E. Wilber, son Richard T. Spencer, six siblings, John, Dorothy, Charles, Elaine, Darwin, and Michael.
She is survived by sons, William W. (Tammy/Jackie), Malcom J. (Sara), daughter, Michelle S. Byrd, brothers, Golden Love, Ronnie (Melda), sister, Ida (Ronald), sisters-in-law, Viola (John) and Esther (Charles), 10 grandchildren, 6 great grand children, many nephews, nieces, great nephews, great nieces, cousins, and numerous friends, including Shirley Jones Shipp, Marguerite Cobb, and Beverly (Stills) Henderson.
